The Enugu State Police Command has vowed to prosecute officers attached to the Awkunanaw Police Station, Garriki, who allegedly extorted N1 million from a traveller.
The victim’s brother, using the handle @Mr_Robmichael1 on X.com, reported that the officers stopped a commercial bus his brother was travelling in. He claimed the officers abducted his brother, took him to an unknown village, and forced him to pay N1 million.
“They kidnapped my younger brother, took him to an unknown village, and extorted N1m. POS collected N50k as charges,” the post read.
Following the incident, the brother reported the matter to the Divisional Police Officer and the State Police Public Relations Officer, Dan Ndukwe. He later revealed that the money was recovered from the officers after the intervention of the police authorities.
“Thanks to DPO Awkunanaw Police Station, Mr. Chukwuegu Longinus. He identified the officers involved and mandated them to refund the money. N1 million has been recovered,” he shared.
Reacting to the incident, Ndukwe condemned the act, describing it as unacceptable. He assured the public that the officers would be held accountable. “Refunding the money isn’t enough. The police officers involved will have to face the consequences. This has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” he stated.
This follows similar cases of police misconduct, including a September incident in Lagos where officers allegedly extorted N1 million from three National Youth Service Corps members.
