Police inspector dismissed over rape allegations

In a decisive move underscoring its commitment to discipline and integrity, the Nigeria Police Force has dismissed Edith Uduma, a former Police Inspector, for gross misconduct linked to the alleged rape of a 17-year-old female suspect.
The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, involves the alleged actions of Sgt. Abraham Uzuobo, who was recorded in a viral video assaulting the victim on October 7, 2024.
According to a statement from the police, the investigation revealed that Uduma, serving as the Charge Room Officer (CRO) at the time, failed to adhere to proper reporting protocols when she witnessed the assault. Instead of documenting the incident as required, she recorded the act and subsequently conspired with her husband, also a police officer, to extort money from Uzuobo in exchange for concealing the crime.
“The police sergeant, identified as Sgt Abraham Uzuobo, had removed the victim from the cell and taken her to an unoccupied office, where he attempted to engage in sexual acts with her,” the statement detailed. Despite the gravity of the situation, Uduma reportedly contacted her husband, Ibrahim Mohammed, to demand One Million Naira (N1,000,000) from Uzuobo. The Sergeant initially offered N45,000, which they accepted, but later refused to comply with their further demands, leading to their decision to report him and release the incriminating video online.
In the aftermath, both Uzuobo and Uduma faced severe repercussions. Uzuobo has been dismissed and is currently incarcerated as his trial progresses. Uduma's dismissal came after thorough investigations revealed her complicity in extortion and manipulation of justice. Additionally, her husband has seen his rank reduced to corporal due to his involvement.
Despite the findings, Uduma has publicly proclaimed her innocence and attempted to tarnish the reputation of the Inspector-General of Police and the entire Force. The police, however, have firmly reiterated the justification for her dismissal, citing her failure to report the incident and her participation in attempts to conceal the crime for personal gain.
“It is imperative to set the record straight and provide clear context regarding her actions and the decision to dismiss her from service,” the statement emphasized. The Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector-General IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., affirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and misconduct, particularly in cases involving vulnerable victims.
The Force remains steadfast in its mission to maintain transparency and uphold the law, urging the public to dismiss unfounded claims against its integrity. “We urge members of the public to disregard the sponsored publications against the stance of the Force, and remain vigilant and support legitimate initiatives aimed at achieving justice.”
