OAU disowns viral student dress code document

T The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has distanced itself from a widely circulated document purporting to outline a new dress code for students, stating that the viral version was not the one officially approved by the university’s governing council.

In a statement dated 25th July, 2025 and signed by the Registrar, K. A. Bakare, the university acknowledged that although the Council had indeed approved a dress code for students, the document making the rounds online was not the authentic version.

“The attention of the Administration of Obafemi Awolowo University has been drawn to a document on dress code for students, supposedly approved by Council,” the statement read.

“Although, Council has approved a dress code for the students of the University, what went viral was not the document approved by Council.”

The university assured that the authentic version of the dress code will be made public in due course. According to the statement, the aim of the official dress code is to “enhance academic sensibilities, social decency and ethical standard in line with the University’s motto ‘for learning and culture’.”

“In view of this development, the general public is hereby informed to disregard the viral document,” the Registrar concluded.
