Nigeria @65: Osun Governor Grants Amnesty to 36 Convicts
O
Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has granted amnesty to 36 convicts as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the Governor said the decision followed recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
He explained that many of the beneficiaries had been convicted of minor offences such as stealing and conspiracy, with most already serving substantial portions of their sentences.
Governor Adeleke described the gesture as a reflection of the “spirit of compassion, justice, and renewal which Independence Day symbolizes.”
According to the statement, 29 inmates were released from the Ilesa Correctional Centre, while seven others were freed from the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre.
