The national electricity grid experienced a catastrophic collapse on Monday evening, plunging the entire nation into darkness.

The blackout occurred at precisely 6:58 PM, causing widespread disruptions across various regions.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) took to social media to inform the public about the incident.

"Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 PM today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas," the company stated, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Similar concerns were echoed by distribution companies in other states, including Abia and Imo.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) also addressed the crisis, revealing that the blackout stemmed from a system collapse at 6:48 PM.

"Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 18:48 hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network," EKEDC reported.

In an effort to restore power, EKEDC assured customers that they are collaborating with stakeholders. "We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored," the company added.

This latest incident marks the sixth collapse of the national electricity grid in 2024 alone, with previous failures recorded in February, March, May, July, August, and now October.
