Lagos Launches Athlete Portal With Biometric ID to Drive Sport Reforms

I In a landmark step to transform the future of sports development, the Lagos State Sports Commission has unveiled a new Athlete Portal with biometric ID integration, designed to identify, profile, and support promising talents across the state.

The initiative was announced at a press conference held at the Commission’s headquarters, where the Director General, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, underscored the importance of data, transparency, and accountability in repositioning sports in Lagos.

He explained that for the first time, the state would have a centralised platform to manage athlete records and track performance. According to him, the online portal will enable the enlistment of senior athletes, as well as provide a system for monitoring and performance evaluation.

Fatodu announced that prospective athletes can now register via https://lssc.lg.gov.ng/athlete-registration/, where their details will be captured, profiled, and monitored through the digital system. He added that physical registration options will also be available to ensure that young talents in underserved communities are not excluded from the process.

The Director General also unveiled the Lagos Sports Development Reforms, the Renewed Grassroots Framework, and the Roadmap to Athletes’ Revitalisation, explaining that these structures place athletes at the center of state sports policies and will ensure that sports in Lagos are governed with digital transparency and an athlete-first approach.

He noted that biometric data capture will be introduced to provide proper profiling, facility access, and career sustainability programmes, while the Team Lagos Reform and Transition Policy will establish transparent entry points for both athletes and coaches, supported by fair retention, disengagement, and onboarding processes.

He further announced the creation of a Sports Officer to serve as Athletes’ Liaison Officer and the establishment of a Team Lagos Monitoring Unit under his office to ensure compliance and performance evaluation.

Fatodu assured that reconstituted teams under the reforms would embody stronger discipline, renewed energy, and a competitive spirit. He also emphasised that athletes would benefit from career sustainability programmes, particularly in preparation for life after active competition. He disclosed that Lagos will soon launch the Team Lagos Open Trials 2025 across all IBILE divisions to ensure a steady inflow of new talents into the state system.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Bolaji Ogunlende, commended the reforms and described Lagos as the natural hub for future champions given the abundance of budding talents across the state. He encouraged athletes to seize the opportunity of the new entry system to build lasting careers with global relevance and affirmed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains passionate about discovering and nurturing grassroots talents.

The Commission further revealed that beyond expanding access to facilities, it plans to strengthen participation through closer collaboration with teachers, parents, community clubs, and other stakeholders. The press conference was attended by the Senior Special Assistant on Sports, Mr. Damilare Orimoloye; the Senior Special Assistant on Sports Marketing, Mr. Opeyemi Adu; and other management staff of the Sports Commission.
