KWASU Debunks False Social Media Claims, Affirms Ongoing Security Efforts in Malete

T The Management of Kwara State University, Malete (KWASU), has strongly refuted a viral social media write-up that alleged government inaction and “deafening silence” over recent security incidents affecting students living off-campus.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 8, by the Acting Director of the University, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, KWASU described the article authored by one Wahab Oba as “malicious” and “bent on destruction rather than construction,” noting that the claims were not only false but also unfair to the sustained efforts by the University and the Kwara State Government.

Oba’s article alleged a lack of response to a string of robbery attacks targeting KWASU students residing in private accommodations in Malete. The university management, however, countered this by stating that several perpetrators of the attacks are already in police custody, with arrests ongoing.

“For the education of the writer, some of the perpetrators of the attacks are in police custody, while those still at large cannot claim that there is any silence,” the statement read. “Successes are being recorded in the restoration of security in the Malete community, and Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON has been central to this achievement.”

KWASU emphasized that it has been working hand-in-hand with security agencies, local government authorities, and the Ministry of Tertiary Education to tackle the insecurity head-on. Measures taken include:

Imposing restrictions on movement and activities in Malete, with the process of formalizing these restrictions into a local bylaw currently underway at the Moro Local Government Council.

Establishing a joint security committee comprising representatives from the University, Malete community, student union, and security agencies to ensure that private hostels engage adequate security and professional vigilantes.

Strengthening the local security architecture with the deployment of more vigilantes, backed with necessary equipment, as well as an increased presence of police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel.

“The Kwara State Government is also in collaboration with the security agencies and ensuring that no stone is left unturned in apprehending those who attacked our students and dispossessed them of their valuables,” the statement added. “Arrests are being made, and more will still be made, and the culprits will face the wrath of the law.”

Dr. Aliyu criticized the use of past events to paint a picture of present inaction, describing it as “clear mischief” and an affront to the efforts of all stakeholders working to secure the area.

“It is a disservice to the government of AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the KWASU Management, the security agencies, and the people of Malete to claim that nothing is being done,” the statement concluded.

“The management of KWASU urges the public to disregard the writeup of Wahab Oba and any such writeups as they are false and aimed at destroying rather than providing solutions.”
