The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the official timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, providing clarity on when voters will go to the polls for national and state offices.
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan confirmed that the presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 20, 2027, while the gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2027.
According to the timetable:
Campaign period for presidential and National Assembly elections: November 18, 2026 – February 19, 2027
Voter registration and continuous update: April 2026 – January 2027
Amupitan addressed circulating misinformation, emphasizing that the commission’s schedule fully adheres to legal requirements, including the mandatory 360-day notice period:
"Any previous timelines shared online were inaccurate. Our official schedule ensures all stakeholders have adequate time to prepare, and we are committed to credible, transparent elections supported by improved technology such as IREV."
Political parties, civil society groups, and voters have begun reacting to the announcement, signaling heightened engagement for the upcoming electoral cycle.
INEC has made the full schedule available on its official website, including deadlines for primaries, bye-elections, and other electoral activities.
