The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed capabilities in tackling online criminal activities.
His comments came after the arrest of 113 foreign nationals involved in a series of cybercrimes, including internet fraud and marketing scams.
The suspects were apprehended on November 3, 2024, in Jahi, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during a coordinated operation by the Zone 7 command and the National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC). A subsequent investigation led to the recovery of an extensive range of digital and physical evidence, vital to the syndicate's operations. These included a Black Toyota Tundra vehicle, various laptops, smartphones, tablets, computers, gaming consoles like Sony PlayStation 5, routers, drones, and high-capacity servers.
The operation also unearthed a stash of international passports, identity cards, and travel documents, suggesting the syndicate's transnational reach.
The evidence points to the syndicate's involvement in unauthorized data breaches, marketing scams, and other illicit cyber activities, with a sophisticated network spanning multiple borders. The items recovered highlight the growing global threat posed by organized cybercrime.
Following thorough investigations, the 113 foreign nationals have been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja. They face numerous charges, including computer-related fraud, unlawful access to data, marketing scams, money laundering, conspiracy, and illegal immigration. This marks a significant step in addressing not only cybercrimes but also the immigration and human trafficking elements linked to these operations.
The Nigeria Police Force continues to strengthen its collaboration with international law enforcement agencies and embassies to track and prosecute cybercriminals. The Force is committed to using technological advancements to safeguard Nigeria's citizens, both physically and in the digital space.
IGP Egbetokun emphasized that the Force is well-equipped and determined to combat cybercrime, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable under Nigerian law.
