Human Rights Group Demands Justice After Attempted Murder of Imam in Iwo
T
The Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative (THURIST) has called on security agencies and relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served in the case of an attempted murder of an Imam in the Obatedo area of Iwo, Osun State.
The disturbing incident reportedly occurred on September 15, 2025, at about 5:10 a.m. while the cleric was preparing to observe his early morning prayers.
According to THURIST, the suspect, described locally as a “Yahoo boy,” allegedly attempted to strangle the Imam inside a mosque in Obatedo. Reports indicate that the same suspect also attacked another worshipper, Mr. Rasaq Tijani, who was making the call to prayer (adhan) at the mosque. Eyewitnesses said Tijani was strangulated in what appeared to be another attempt on his life before members of the community intervened and apprehended the assailant.
The suspect was immediately handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Adeeke Divisional Headquarters in Iwo. However, THURIST raised alarm that despite being in custody, the suspect has allegedly refused to cooperate with investigators or make a formal statement, thereby frustrating the investigative process.
In a statement signed by its Director General, S.A. Tadese, the organisation further alleged that “some high and mighty within Iwoland” are already interfering in the matter in an attempt to pervert the course of justice. THURIST vowed to resist such interference, stressing that it would deploy every legal and civic mechanism available to ensure that the case is pursued to a logical conclusion.
“This is a heinous crime that cannot be swept under the carpet,” Tadese said. “The attempted murder of an Imam while observing his religious duties is not only an attack on an individual but an attack on the sanctity of faith and community peace. Justice must prevail, and those responsible must face the full wrath of the law.”
THURIST used the opportunity to call on the Nigeria Police Force, civil society organisations, and the general public to remain vigilant and insist on accountability in the case. The group reiterated its commitment to defending the rights of citizens, regardless of the status of those involved.
The case has stirred tension in Iwo, with community members demanding a thorough investigation to prevent a repeat of such violent attacks in places of worship.
