Controversy Trails Sale of Ikirun Refuse Dumping Land, NIPU Seeks Legal Clarification

A A community-based organisation, the Northern States Council of the National Ikirun Progressive Union (NIPU), has demanded clarification from a former chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Alhaji Hassan Kamorudeen Okanlawon, over the alleged sale of Ikirun’s designated refuse dumping land at Agboro Community.

In a formal letter signed by its Secretary, Abdelhafeez Olalekan Ishaq Maigida, the group accused the former council boss of disposing of about 10 acres of land originally acquired and reserved for waste disposal during his tenure between 2021 and 2022.

“The alleged sale of this land has left Ikirun without a designated dumping site, worsening environmental and public health challenges,” the letter stated.

It added, “The continuous burning of refuse at Alamisi Junction has become a serious environmental and public health concern. The practice releases thick smoke and toxic fumes into the air, posing risks to residents, road users, traders, and commuters in the area. It also causes poor visibility for motorists, which may lead to accidents."

NIPU said the land was actively used for refuse disposal before Okanlawon assumed office, but was reportedly sold on the grounds that the area had been developed and waste dumping was affecting residents.

The group has asked the former chairman to publicly provide documents backing the sale, including court approvals, valuation reports, proof of payment, and evidence of compliance with due process.

Failure to respond within one month, NIPU warned, would force the group to escalate the matter to relevant government agencies.
