The African Union (AU) has hailed the signing of a landmark peace agreement between the Amhara National Regional State and the Amhara FANO Popular Organization (FANO-AFPO), describing it as a major step toward lasting stability in Ethiopia.
The agreement was signed in Addis Ababa in the presence of H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, who represented the AU, and Mr. Mohamed Abdi Ware, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Speaking at the ceremony, Haddadi praised both parties for choosing dialogue and compromise over conflict, noting that the pact carries significance beyond Ethiopia.
“Each peace agreement inches us closer to achieving our goal of Silencing the Guns in Africa,” she said. “On behalf of the African Union, I congratulate the parties for reaching this important milestone. This achievement demonstrates the power of African-led solutions to African challenges.”
The AU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the implementation of the agreement and expressed optimism that the development will contribute to durable peace and national cohesion in Ethiopia.
