JUST IN: Sultan Directs Muslims To Look Out For New Moon Monday
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has directed Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the new moon of Jumada Assaniya 1448 AH on Monday, November 9, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued by the Sultanate Council of Sokoto on Sunday and signed by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, Monday corresponds to the 29th day of Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH and has been designated for the sighting of the new crescent marking the beginning of Jumada Assaniya, the sixth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The Sultanate Council urged Muslims across the country to participate in the moon-sighting exercise and report any confirmed sighting to the nearest District or Village Head.
The reports are expected to be forwarded through the traditional leadership structure to the Sultan for consideration and necessary action.
“Muslims are therefore requested to start looking for the new moon of Jumada Assaniya 1448 AH on Monday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA),” the statement read.
The council also urged Muslims to seek Allah’s guidance and assistance in carrying out the religious responsibility.
“May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty, amen,” the statement added.
Jumada Assaniya, also known as Jumada al-Thani or Jumada al-Akhirah, is the sixth month of the Islamic calendar, which follows the lunar cycle.
The outcome of Monday’s exercise will determine whether the new crescent has been sighted and enable the Sultan to make an official announcement on the commencement of Jumada Assaniya 1448 AH.
