The initiative, administered by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, is designed to provide financial assistance to poor and vulnerable Nigerian households facing rising living costs.
In a statement issued on October 30, 2026, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the commencement of NERSI, describing it as a presidential intervention aimed at providing immediate financial relief to vulnerable Nigerians.
Doro said eligible beneficiaries would receive ₦50,000 monthly, adding that the programme would be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in the cost of living.
He explained that the ministry was working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure and transparent disbursement.
How Nigerians can receive the ₦50,000
According to the programme’s guidelines, beneficiaries are selected through verified national identity records and the National Social Register.
Those selected will receive an SMS from one of the approved financial service providers notifying them of their selection and requesting their consent to participate.
Beneficiaries are expected to reply YES or follow the instructions provided in the notification to activate their mobile wallets.
Following confirmation, a wallet linked to the beneficiary’s phone number and National Identification Number (NIN) will be opened, after which the ₦50,000 support will be credited.
The money can subsequently be withdrawn through a bank or Point of Sale (POS) agent or spent directly from the mobile wallet.
The programme also provides access through USSD codes, meaning beneficiaries do not necessarily need smartphones or internet connections to access the service.
FG warns Nigerians against fraudulent registration
The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against individuals demanding money to facilitate registration, beneficiary selection or payment of the relief funds.
According to the NERSI portal, participation is free, and beneficiaries are not required to submit fresh applications, pay processing charges or visit government offices to secure the support.
The government also cautioned Nigerians against disclosing their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and account passwords to anyone.
It advised beneficiaries to trust only notifications originating from the five approved payment providers and to avoid suspicious links or requests for payment.
The programme further explained that not every eligible household would be included in the first batch of beneficiaries, as payments and notifications would be handled in phases.
The government has provided 0700-022-2222 as the official NERSI helpline for Nigerians seeking clarification about the intervention.
The Federal Government said the initiative complements its existing social protection and economic support programmes.
