Nine Killed As Private Jet Crashes Into Florida Residential Neighbourhood, 600 Residents Evacuated
Nine people have been killed after a private jet crashed into a residential neighbourhood in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, triggering a massive fire and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
The Learjet 60 business aircraft crashed at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, November 1, while travelling from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft died in the crash.
The aircraft plunged into the neighbourhood near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, before erupting into a fireball.
The impact left a crater in the roadway, with aircraft debris scattered around the crash site and thick black smoke rising above the residential area.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the incident as a catastrophic aircraft crash, saying there were no immediate reports of people on the ground being killed or injured.
The crash occurred close to residential buildings and a busy roadway, raising concerns about the potential for additional casualties.
Local authorities subsequently began evacuating approximately 600 residents from a nearby mobile home community as emergency operations continued.
According to information released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had departed Austin, Texas, and was heading to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when the incident occurred.
Preliminary flight information and air traffic control recordings indicated that the pilots encountered icing, precipitation and severe turbulence while flying at approximately 35,000 feet.
The pilots reportedly requested permission to climb before the aircraft began losing altitude rapidly.
Air traffic control recordings indicated that the crew declared an emergency and issued distress calls as the aircraft descended at an increasing rate.
One of the pilots reportedly warned air traffic controllers that the aircraft was going to crash into the ground.
The aircraft subsequently entered a steep descent before crashing in the residential neighbourhood.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and other rescue personnel, rushed to the scene to tackle the resulting fire and secure the affected area.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident occurred near Military Trail and announced the closure of the road in both directions, advising motorists to avoid the area.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, with the NTSB leading the investigation.
Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft wreckage, flight data and communications between the pilots and air traffic controllers to establish what caused the aircraft to lose control.
Although preliminary information points to severe weather conditions encountered during the flight, authorities have not established the cause of the crash.
The identities of the nine people killed had not been officially released in the reports examined as of November 2.
