The Federal Government has commenced a monthly cash relief programme offering ₦50,000 to vulnerable households across Nigeria to cushion the impact of rising living costs.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the intervention in a statement issued on Friday, October 30, in Abuja.

The programme, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is a presidential initiative designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of Nigerians facing economic hardship.

Doro said the intervention was introduced in response to global food inflation and increasing prices of essential goods, which have continued to put pressure on household finances.

“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs,” the minister said.

He explained that the programme would be reviewed regularly to reflect changes in the cost of living, adding that beneficiaries would be notified directly before any adjustment to the payments.

How beneficiaries will receive the money

According to the minister, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction is working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure, timely and transparent disbursement.

Beneficiaries will receive text messages from approved providers requesting their consent to participate in the payment process.

Following their consent, the money will be transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

The minister stressed that Nigerians do not need to submit applications, pay registration fees or register through agents to access the intervention.

He also warned against fraudsters attempting to exploit the programme, advising potential beneficiaries not to disclose their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to anyone.

Doro urged Nigerians who are uncertain about messages received in connection with the intervention, or anyone asked to pay money to access the programme, to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.

Part of government’s social protection efforts

The minister described NERSI as a complementary intervention to existing Federal Government social protection and economic support programmes.

He said the initiative was designed to strengthen household resilience and economic stability while providing immediate assistance to Nigerians affected by increasing living costs.

Doro added that the programme aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to implementing the intervention with dignity, transparency and accountability.
