President Bola Tinubu has promised Nigerians prosperity, economic recovery and greater opportunities if re-elected in 2027, as he formally launched the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign in Kaduna on Saturday.

Tinubu appealed to voters to give him another four-year term, saying his administration needed more time to consolidate its policies and translate ongoing reforms into improved living conditions.

Speaking at the campaign flag-off at Ranchers Bees Stadium on October 24, the President said his administration was committed to prosperity, growth, recovery and opportunity.

He also urged supporters to mobilise voters for APC candidates in the presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections.

Tinubu defended his administration’s economic policies and rejected criticism from opposition politicians over hunger and poverty, arguing that the problems predated his government.

“I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did. They created the hunger; they created the poverty. We are trying to eradicate it,” the President said.

He further defended the removal of the petrol subsidy, describing the policy as part of efforts to address corruption, fraudulent invoicing and smuggling.

The campaign launch comes as economic hardship remains a major concern for many Nigerians. Since Tinubu took office in May 2023, his administration has implemented major economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange system.

While these measures have been credited with improving aspects of public finances and investor confidence, they have also contributed to pressure on household budgets and the rising cost of living.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, a presidential contender under the African Democratic Congress, criticised Tinubu’s attempt to blame opposition parties for the hardship. Through his campaign’s communications representative, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that the President should account for his administration’s record and address the economic difficulties facing Nigerians.

Atiku’s response was part of the political disagreement surrounding the campaign launch. His criticisms and Tinubu’s defence represent competing political positions; responsibility for the country’s economic challenges cannot be established solely by either side’s statements.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani also praised the Federal Government’s support for development programmes, including infrastructure, agriculture and initiatives intended to improve citizens’ welfare.

The APC Presidential Campaign Council’s Director-General, Abdulaziz Yari, expressed confidence in the party’s prospects and urged supporters to campaign on the administration’s record.

Tinubu’s campaign is expected to face scrutiny over the economy and security as the 2027 presidential election approaches. His promise of prosperity will be judged against the effects of government policies on jobs, household purchasing power, public services and the wider cost of living.
