Brazilian Man Dies After Father’s Grave Collapses Beneath Him
A 48-year-old man has died after falling into his father’s grave when its covering collapsed beneath him at a cemetery in Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brazil.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 21, at São José Municipal Cemetery in the Interlagos neighbourhood, where the man had gone to attend the burial of a friend who died in a road accident.
According to Brazilian news reports, the man later went to visit his father’s grave and sat on its concrete covering. The structure reportedly gave way, causing him to fall into the grave.
People nearby reportedly heard the sound of the collapse and raised the alarm. Emergency personnel from Brazil’s Mobile Emergency Care Service and the military fire brigade were called to the scene.
The rescuers recovered the man’s body, but he was already dead when emergency personnel arrived, according to local reports.
A Brazilian news outlet identified the victim as Adilson Marcaro, also known locally as Dilsinho. He was reportedly buried on Thursday, October 22, in the same grave where the fatal accident occurred.
The precise circumstances surrounding the collapse remain subject to investigation.
The incident has also drawn attention to the condition of grave structures and the precautions visitors should take when moving around cemeteries.
The Linhares municipal government expressed condolences to the victim’s family and friends. It also advised visitors to exercise caution around graves and other structures that could pose safety risks.
The municipality said its responsibility includes maintaining common areas within public cemeteries, while the upkeep and structural maintenance of individual graves and family burial plots are the responsibility of the families concerned.
With Brazil’s All Souls’ Day observance approaching on November 2, authorities have urged cemetery visitors to remain cautious during their visits.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
