A man and his son have died after a commercial tricycle caught fire following a road crash at Sabon Barki in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Three other people, including the man’s wife, two other children and the tricycle operator, sustained injuries in the incident, which occurred at about 4:20 p.m. on Sunday.

The family was reportedly returning from church when another vehicle, said to be a bus, hit the tricycle, causing the crash and subsequent fire.

An eyewitness, Kefas Gyang, told The Punch that he arrived at the scene after the incident and found people struggling to rescue the victims from the burning tricycle.

He said the fire was too intense for bystanders to contain, making it difficult to rescue those trapped.

Gyang clarified that he did not witness the collision and could not provide a firsthand account of how it occurred.

The man’s wife reportedly sustained a broken leg, while the couple’s two other children and the tricycle operator were taken to hospital for treatment.

The Punch also quoted the Federal Road Safety Corps’ Public Education Officer in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, as confirming the deaths of two male victims.

Longsan described the crash as serious and said the victims had been trapped under the vehicle. He also alleged that the bus driver fled the scene after the collision.

However, the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the precise cause of the collision and the fire, were not fully established in the reports reviewed.

The incident adds to road safety concerns in Plateau State, where a major multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo–Jos route earlier in October claimed numerous lives. That earlier incident was separate from Sunday’s crash at Sabon Barki.
