Mob Sets Lagos BRT Bus Ablaze After Reported Death Of Motorcyclist
A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus was reportedly set ablaze by an angry mob at Ogolonto Bus Stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State, following a collision involving a commercial motorcyclist.
The incident, which was reported on Friday, October 16, allegedly occurred after the bus struck the motorcyclist along the BRT corridor, resulting in the rider’s reported death.
According to a report by Punch Newspapers, the incident attracted a crowd, with police officers and operatives of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps reportedly intervening to rescue the bus driver.
The newspaper cited a video shared on X by a user identified as @kinglammyjames, who claimed that the motorcyclist was crushed by the bus before youths in the area set the vehicle on fire.
However, the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the cause of the accident and the identity of the motorcyclist, had not been established in the available reports.
It was also unclear whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the burning of the bus.
A separate report by Citizen NewsNG gave a different account of the motorcyclist’s condition, stating that the rider was taken to a nearby private hospital for treatment after the collision. The report did not establish whether the rider subsequently died.
The conflicting accounts could not be independently resolved as of the time of filing this report.
The incident highlights two separate public-safety concerns: the circumstances surrounding the reported road accident and the destruction of the bus by members of the crowd.
While the cause of the collision remains unclear, setting the vehicle on fire and attacking its driver could expose other road users and bystanders to further danger.
The Lagos State Police Command and relevant transport authorities had not issued an independently verified public statement establishing the full circumstances of the incident at the time of research.
The identity of the motorcyclist, the extent of the damage to the bus and whether arrests had been made remained unconfirmed.
