The Headies Postpones 18th Awards to April 2027, Expands Nigeria-Canada Programme
Organisers of The Headies have postponed the 18th edition of the Nigerian music awards to April 10 and 11, 2027, moving the ceremony from its original October 23, 2026 date in Toronto, Canada.
The organisers announced the revised schedule in a statement published on The Headies’ official website on October 10, explaining that the change would allow them to expand activities across Nigeria and Canada before the Toronto finale.
The 18th edition, themed Africa to the World, will combine music, creative industry engagements and business opportunities, culminating in the awards ceremony and the Headies Global Trade & Investment Summit.
According to the organisers, activities under the ‘Road to The Headies’ initiative will continue during the period originally scheduled for the main ceremony.
The programme is expected to include workshops, seminars and other engagements involving artistes, nominees and stakeholders in the music and wider creative industries.
The organisers said further information about the programme calendar, venues and participation arrangements would be communicated through their official channels.
The postponement affects guests who had already made travel arrangements and other commitments for the October event.
In their statement, the organisers acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the change and apologised to those affected.
Ayo Animashaun, founder of The Headies, said the expanded programme was intended to bring music creators into closer contact with people and organisations capable of supporting the industry’s growth.
The organisers said the awards would remain at the centre of the programme, while the additional engagements would create opportunities for connections across music, business and investment.
However, they did not identify a specific financial, visa-related or logistical problem as the reason for rescheduling the ceremony in the statement examined.
The Headies Global Trade & Investment Summit is expected to form a major part of the expanded programme.
According to the organisers, the summit is designed to connect African businesses, investors, government representatives and creative industry leaders with international markets, capital and potential strategic partners.
The programme will therefore extend beyond the awards ceremony to include discussions and engagements focused on commercial opportunities within the creative economy.
The organisers are positioning the Toronto edition as part of a wider effort to strengthen connections between Nigeria’s creative sector and international markets.
The extent of the summit’s participation, including its confirmed speakers, venue and detailed schedule, is yet to be established in the announcement.
Established in 2006 as the Hip Hop World Awards, The Headies recognises achievements by artistes and other professionals in the Nigerian music industry.
The awards held two consecutive editions in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States before returning to Nigeria in 2024.
The planned Toronto edition represents another international step for the awards, with the organisers combining the ceremony with industry and business engagements under the Africa to the World theme.
The revised dates mean that the main ceremony will now take place nearly six months after its originally announced October 2026 schedule.
The organisers said further details about the April 2027 programme and arrangements for participants would be announced through The Headies’ official communication channels.
