PDP Drama in Osun: Adebayo Withdraws Days Before Election, Backs Adeleke

The political landscape in Osun State has experienced a major shake-up just three days before the August 15, 2026, governorship election. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Adedamola Adebayo, widely known as FRYO, has officially withdrawn from the race and thrown his weight behind Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party.
Adebayo announced his exit from the contest during a high-stakes press conference in Osogbo on Wednesday, instructing all PDP members, loyalists, and campaign structures across the state to redirect their votes toward Adeleke’s re-election bid.
Putting State Above Ambition
Addressing journalists, Adebayo explained that the abrupt decision came after rigorous consultations with key political stakeholders and a thorough assessment of the state’s political climate. He maintained that the move was entirely his own responsibility and driven by the collective interest of Osun residents rather than personal political gain.
“Politics is not only about contesting elections. Politics is also about understanding the realities of the moment, making difficult decisions when necessary, and putting the larger interest of our people above personal ambition,” Adebayo stated.
While acknowledging that some supporters might find the sudden pivot difficult to swallow, he urged them to respect his judgment, maintain peace, and avoid political hostility. He also issued a stern call to all political parties and candidates to steer clear of violence, intimidation, and hate speech as the state counts down to Saturday’s poll.
“Osun State is bigger than any individual. Osun State is bigger than any political party. And Osun State is certainly bigger than any election,” he added.
A Rapidly Shifting Race
Adebayo’s dramatic exit marks the second high-profile withdrawal to hit the Osun governorship race in its closing days.
Earlier, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship hopeful, Adesina Adeyemi-Doro, also stepped down from the ballot. Adeyemi-Doro aligned his camp with the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his support for APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji during an Osun Youth Interactive Session in Osogbo.
With key opposition figures stepping aside and realigning with major contenders, the stage is set for a fiercely contested showdown at the polls on August 15.
