Troops of the Forward Operation Base (FOB) Malumfashi, under the Headquarters of 17 Brigade Nigerian Army, have achieved a significant operational victory with the recovery of 529 rustled livestock in Kafur Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State. The successful operation followed a fierce engagement with suspected terrorists in the area on 7 February 2026.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Army, the operation was initiated after credible intelligence indicated that terrorists, believed to have infiltrated from neighbouring Zamfara State, were operating in the Kasuwan Sabo area of Kafur LGA. The terrorists were allegedly led by Idi Abasu Aiki, the younger brother of notorious bandit leader Ado Aliero.
The troops, led by Lieutenant Colonel MM Isa, Commanding Officer of FOB Malumfashi, swiftly mobilized and advanced to the location. Upon spotting the advancing soldiers, the terrorists opened fire, but the troops responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to flee into nearby bushes, taking some of the stolen livestock with them.
Troops immediately launched a hot pursuit, catching up with the fleeing terrorists between Burdugau and Unguwan Matau villages in Malumfashi LGA. During the operation, the terrorists abandoned the rustled livestock and were eventually defeated after an extensive sweep of the area.
A total of 529 livestock were recovered, including 290 cows, 238 sheep, one donkey, and one motorcycle. However, 14 cows, which had been used as shields by the terrorists, were killed in the crossfire. Fortunately, no casualties were reported on the side of the Nigerian Army troops.
The recovered livestock were handed over to the appropriate authorities for verification and returned to their rightful owners. Honourable Suraju Nature, Chairman of Kafur LGA, and Superintendent of Police Aminu Salihu, Divisional Police Officer for Kafur, oversaw the identification and return process.
Major General Paul Koughna, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, commended the professionalism and gallantry displayed by the troops.
"The operation underscores the Nigerian Army's commitment to aggressive operations against criminal elements within the region. We will continue to maintain a strong presence to deny terrorists any freedom of action," he stated.
The troops of FOB Malumfashi have since continued to dominate the area with aggressive patrols, further ensuring the safety and security of local communities.
