Thai Woman Jailed for Human Trafficking Ordered to Repay £3,815 Crime Proceeds

A A Thai national currently serving a nine-year prison sentence for human trafficking has been ordered to hand over £3,815 after prosecutors successfully pursued proceeds of crime action against her.

Mananchaya Wanitthanawet, 42, was convicted of exploiting two fellow Thai women in the sex trade across Scotland between July 2019 and July 2022.

The confiscation order was granted at the High Court of Justiciary, where prosecutors confirmed that a settlement had been reached to recover profits from her criminal activities.

During her trial in Dundee, the court heard how she recruited and transported the victims, advertised their sexual services, and forced them into prostitution under the guise of helping them find work in the United Kingdom.

Sentencing her, Lord Scott said: “This involved the deliberate degrading of fellow human beings. What you put them through was dehumanising.”
