Lagos Lawmaker Condemns Killing of Dispatch Rider, Demands Prosecution of Suspects

A A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, has condemned the killing of a dispatch rider allegedly attacked by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Tapa Street, Lagos Island.

The lawmaker, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, reacted to a viral video of the incident which occurred on Thursday, September 18, 2025. The footage showed a union member, identified as Shamsideen Adio, repeatedly assaulting the victim, even after he had become unconscious.

Describing the act as “barbaric, shameful, inhuman and heartbreaking,” Hon. Adedeji called for the police to ensure that Shamsideen and his accomplices face the full weight of the law.

“This is an act that must be condemned by every well-meaning Nigerian. The sanctity of human life has no alternative and no human being can be more superior than the other,” he said.

He further urged the Lagos State leadership of the NURTW, headed by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to immediately suspend Shamsideen and dissociate the union from such lawless behavior.

The legislator commended the police for the swift arrest of the main suspect but stressed the need for effective prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Lagosians want to see that the culprits face the legal consequence of their action. Whatever is the result of the legal action, Lagosians and the likes of Shamsideen will know that nobody has the right to take the life of another person,” he added.

Hon. Adedeji also called for continuous education and enlightenment of NURTW members to prevent future incidents of violence.
